Vanessa

 James' mother (Vanessa) is the mother of James and the wife of Phillip.

Biography

At some point in her life, she married Phillip and later gave birth to their son, James. She and her son seemed to have shared a close bond previous to her death, which is why her death still affects him to the present day. It is unknown the exact reason why she killed herself, but throughout James's flashbacks, she is shown to suffer mental illnesses and suicidal thoughts. It is possible she suffered some form of postpartum depression.

Death

She died by drowning herself in a lake through the use of her car whilst on a day out with James. Unfortunately, her young son watched as the tragedy unfolded. The witnessing of this event would later trigger James into believing he was a psychopath, a belief that would heavily influence his actions throughout the series, including his fatal murder of Clive Koch and its aftermath. The illness he actually suffered from, was heavy PTSD, due to the tragic events of his mother's death.
